Opened in 1991, the Pig provides what many people believe to be a unique service in the San Francisco area - that of the true Pub. Whereas there are a multitude of bars and restaurants here, the Pig and Whistle provides something more. In addition to San Francisco's finest selection of draft beers and award winning pub dining, the establishment gives regulars and newcomers alike a meeting place, a watering hole, and a social center, all wrapped up in the cozy atmosphere that is the traditional pub.

The Name 'Pig and Whistle'

The name 'Pig and Whistle' comes from the Old English words 'Piggin' and 'Wassail'. Piggin was a big lead cup which was used to hold a spiced wine, called Wassail. In winter the wine would be heated and drunk at the local 'Inn'. Gradually the Inn took on the name of the famous wine and the mug it was drunk from, hence Pig and Whistle
