Cricket is a ritual devised a few hundred years ago when a group of Englishmen would whack a ball around the village green until it started to rain. They would then go to the pub and spend far more time talking about it, than actually playing the game. Thus the games would last several days with time added on for recovery. The Pig and Whistle Cricket Club enthusiastically continues this time-honoured tradition, but with the lack of summer precipitation in Northern California the breaks have to be artificially induced, and with the lack of a village green in San Francisco, all of our games must be as guests. However the most important aspects of this venerable game are still in evidence, the sportsmanship, cameraderie and insatiable thirst of the constituents, and the incessant discussion of the game at the pub. |
